For many years I have taught my students that smudging is essential for the health of people as well as animals. And I share the same information with my clients. Recently I saw those benefits dramatically illustrated for dog Lizzie. When I first met Lizzie she wore a vest that proclaimed that she was blind and deaf.

She would often pace and circle anxiously—bumping into furniture and walls. My client was losing a lot of sleep trying to keep Lizzie calm, day and night. My client wanted to offer Lizzie as much quality of life as possible for her remaining time.

We began a sequence of energy balancing sessions, and there was marked improvement.

Healing with sound, music & sage - and a little chat about everyday life.

But when my client began smudging her house, and Lizzie, additional benefits were observed immediately. Whenever Lizzie would begin her anxious pacing my client would smudge her, and she would instantly relax and peacefully lie down. Smudging utilizes the energetic and spiritual energy of a sacred plant such as white sage—in the form of smoke—to clear spaces house, office, car or personal energy. Before lighting the smudge bundle you ask the spirit of the plant for assistance and healing.

When lit, the smoke cleanses and purifies. Our bodies are comprised of energy. As we age our energy fields become more porous—rather like leaky jars. And that means if there are cracks in the energy field where energy can leak out, those same cracks also let heavy energy in. Where does this heavy energy come from? Put simply, every living being has an energy field.

Whether engaged in day-to-day life or facing major challenges filled with trauma and drama, we all are affected by the energy of others. This creates heavy energy, which gets into your energy field and that of your animal companion, and which then comes home with you. Unless cleared, that energy begins to work its way into the inner energy pathways of the physical body.

Once entrenched in the physical body heavy energy can have a major impact on health and emotional balance. It is much less easily dispersed as well. Much better to clear it by smudging before it moves in and sets up housekeeping! Whether dealing with illness or maintaining wellness, smudging is a very simple technique that supports the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of all species.

It is also helpful to have a seashell or ceramic bowl to catch any embers while smudging. When done you may lay the sage stick in the shell or immerse the burning end of the smudge in a small pot of sand. Never leave unattended until safely extinguished.Skip to content. With the sudden popularity of oil diffusers—an easy way to release these oils into your home—there has been an emergence of alarm about how these oils may affect animals in the home.

Dogs and cats who have either walked through oils, gotten some on their coat or had oils placed directly on them can develop health concerns. If a pet ingested concentrated essential oils, you may see vomiting, diarrhea and depression, as well. Some oils may in fact be more harmful than others. However, there are several factors that affect this such as concentration level, and what the product is mixed with.

Think about it, you spend a lot of time in these places, living your life and dealing with all matter of energies on a daily basis ranging from positive experiences to negative ones. Your dreams, thoughts and actions are all energy and can fill a space pretty quickly with residual vibrations.

Just as you would dust, tidy up or vacuum your home to keep it from becoming cluttered with dirt and objects, your spaces should be periodically cleared because they too can easily become cluttered with energy. Our animals are connected to energies too, and are easily affected by them and vibrations, even more than we are. I recently had several clients whose animals were exhibiting unwanted behaviors; some of them had been doing them for months.

When I talked to their animals they told me that they were trying to let their people know that the energies in the home were uncomfortable to them. Animals have a limited way of getting our attention unless we keep an active dialogue with them using animal communication so many times the only path they can take to show us how they feel is through actions.

Second Technique Is Clearing With Ammonia I use this technique when the negative energy in a space has become exceedingly bad. The negative energies could arise from incidents as, an unpleasant divorce, a bad breakup, if some one living in the space has been extremely ill, or was bad tempered, it can also come about if there has been any violence in the space, or any other traumatic incident.

The first initial cleansing of the space should be done using ammonia, then once it has, sage can be used from then on for all future smudging. Fill a spray bottle with water and then add a capful or ammonia do NOT use more than that because the smell will be too strong.

Then do the same as with the sage going in a CLOCKWISE motion go through the room and spray the ammonia into the corners of the room, the ones at the ceiling too if you can. How often should I smudge?
